The Old Jail-167 San Marco Ave., St. Augustine, FL. Hours: Daily 8:30am- 5 pm (Call to verify) Phone: 904-829-3800. This has become a Florida version of the Witches’ Dungeon in Salem, Massachusetts, or of any haunted mansion or alien autopsy attraction, where the help cackles, stomps, bangs things, and contorts their faces in an effort to make you uncomfortable. The jail was built by the same company that later built Alcatraz. The pink stucco exterior has been restored, and the prison again looks the way it did originally — pleasing to the eye, like a hotel. It housed convicts until 1953, when it became a tourist attraction.

New MiniGolf coming to Universal Orlando

Universal Orlando will be entering the minigolf game as of 2012. According to the official press release, the course will feature themes and decor related to classic drive-in movies:
“…guests will be whisked into an elaborately-themed environment based on the vintage horror flicks and ‘little green men’ science fiction films of the 1950s. As they experience two family friendly courses, ‘The Haunting of Ghostly Greens’ and ‘Invaders From Planet Putt,’ guests will putt their way through elaborate movie-style scenes, passing through a cemetery, under a giant spider, through a flying saucer and into the basement lab in a haunted house.” The two 18-hole courses feature interactive elements and special effects, making for a very immersing experience. Both courses will be lit with LED lights along the edges, so you can putt and play day or night. Universal execs are positioning this as a “perfect” addition to CityWalk. Construction will begin this summer and the course is expected to open in early 2012.

Blue Man Group is a performance by, well, blue men: an indescribable mix of mime, percussion, and antics involving the audience. Blue Man Group can be seen in New York City, Las Vegas, London, and other venues — including Universal Orlando. Blue Man Group has a special theater in Universal Studios Florida, but performance-goers can get to the theater directly from CityWalk (no need for a ticket to the theme park.) Ticket price range is $59 to $69 per adult, $49 to $59 per child. (Check web site for latest rates.) Alternatively, you can buy tickets in a package with theme park admission and save a few bucks. The show has been especially designed for Universal Orlando and includes new material.

Hyperion Wharf construction delayed, Splitsville Announced

Disney has announced that they have decided to delay construction on the new Hyperion Wharf entertainment district indefinitely as they re-evaluate their plans for the area. Hyperion Wharf, a modern version of an early 20th century entertainment pier, was meant to replace Pleasure Island and was only announced in November of 2010. According to Disney’s official statement: “During the course of this site work, we identified opportunities to further refine our master plan and are pausing to evaluate them. What does this mean for you? While we’re moving quickly along with moving companies phoenix, it will admittedly cause a delay in construction. But we’re willing to bet that any delay will be worth the wait once we’re able to share details about the exciting work we’ve been doing.”
While construction on Hyperion Wharf has been delayed, Disney also announced that Splitsville will be taking over the old Virgin Mega-store building. Splitsville is a chain of entertainment venues complete with bowling alleys, billiards, dining and music. The Virgin Mega-store building was most recently occupied by Ridemakerz but Ridemakerz will relocate to a smaller location in the Downtown Disney Marketplace.
